Do Toddlers Write Better Emails? You may be Surprised…

toddler

Yesterday, while I was walking Moose around the block (actually, Moose was walking me) I heard this gem from marketing master Justin Blackman:

“Want your writing to sound more natural? Make zero effort to sound smart. That’s it…Sentences are short, and my vocabulary is on par with a toddler. And no big words. I just don’t use them. Why? Because big words don’t sound natural.”

Right on, Justin.

Reminds me of the time I heard some smarty-pants radio hosts call a song “casual profundity.” After looking up “profundity” in the dictionary, I sent an email mocking that mouthful of unnatural-ness.

I wrote, “There’s often a simpler word. A shorter word. A more widely-known word.

In most cases, you can find a simpler, shorter, widely-known word that means the same as the big word. The small word paints the same picture, tells the same story.”

And, as Justin points out: The small word sounds more natural.

More conversational.

More human.

More personality-er.

That word, “personality-er” – I borrowed it from Justin.

He sells a thing called the “Write More Personality-er Workshop – 57 Ways to add punch, power & pop into your everyday writing.”

And I bought it for $169.

Worth every penny.

You can get it here: https://www.justinblackman.com/copyworkshop.

No kick-back for me. I’m sharing this because it’s great…

…and because this tip about big words will help you turn emails from trash to treasure.

I thought about weaving the tip into my workshop later today – How to Transform Your Emails from Trash to Treasure (details and registration here)…

…but I already have five great tips lined up for you.

This is a 5in25 workshop – 5 tips in 25 minutes, followed by Q&A.

If I include the tip about big words, that would make 6.

A “6in30 workshop?’  Not as catchy, is it?

So, consider this a bonus tip (thanks, Justin, for letting me share some stuff from your paid program).

If you want 5 more tips, sign up for the workshop.

Today (Friday, June 3). It starts at 12 p.m. EDT, 9 a.m. PDT.

You don’t have to pay a single penny to attend.

But I won’t record it.

So no tips for no-shows.
