Why ‘Know Your Why’ Isn’t Great Content Marketing Advice

I say this often: Storytelling for business is not about fashioning your origin story. It’s about discovering your prospects’ stories. That’s why I love this article by Robert Rose. So many marketers “start with why,” thanks to Simon Sinek who touted the idea in his TED talk and book.

“Here’s the problem,” Rose suggests. “Most likely, no one outside your brand cares about your brand’s why.”

That’s true. No one cares about your story unless it reflects theirs.

I like Sinek’s TED talk and book. But I think most marketers have missed the point. Rose gets it right.

Smashing the Plateau

I’ve been listening to David Shriner-Cahn’s podcast Smashing the Plateau, and I’m loving it. David is an experienced and wise consultant who helps consultants, coaches, entrepreneurs and small business owners succeed.

The podcast features a wide variety of business-building strategies and tactics. The target audience: consultants following a later career job exit. But I find the content applicable to businesses of all shapes and sizes.

David also runs the the Smashing the Plateau Community, where consultants come together to meet and support one another, get answers to burning questions, learn from experts, participate in growth challenges, and more.

More information about the podcast and the community here.
