Why I Stop and Smell the Roses

Attentive email reader Jason emailed yesterday to say:

“What’s up with the flowers? (I like them)”

He was talking about the photos I’ve put at the top of my Monday “RecomMONDAYtions” emails. Here’s the one I included yesterday…

Here’s what I told Jason:

Every day, I walk around the neighborhood and try to notice something interesting, something beautiful.

For me, it’s a form of meditation. Let go of the noise in my life. Look for the beauty around me.

Also, I want to exercise my noticing muscles. I want to use all my senses. The better I become at noticing, the better I become at business.

In business, great leaders are great noticers. Great coaches are great noticers. Great content creators are great noticers.

Austin Kleon said:

“If you want to be interesting, you have to be interested.”

When I slow down to notice how the morning light makes that pansy in my garden glow, I’m showing interest in the world around me. That’s so much better than letting the world pass me by.

Speaking of Austin Kleon…

He wrote a book called “Steal Like an Artist.” To say it’s “interesting” would be an understatement.

I love this book and page through it often to find guidance and inspiration.

“Steal Like an Artist” is this month’s selection for theĀ Mastermind Book Club.

Each month, Ted Prodromou and I choose a great book for Club members to read and discuss. On the fourth Thursday of the month (Thursday, April 25 this month), we meet live on Zoom to discuss the book.

The Club is free to joinĀ here. Members receive multiple notices about the event (with the Zoom link).
