Why You Should Ditch Your Computer

1250x672 (1)

The best piece of advice I ever got about writing emails and other marketing content:

Write your first draft without stopping to edit.

Plow through until you finish the draft. Then go back and edit.

I don’t recall who suggested this.

And I have to admit: I don’t always follow this advice.

But when I write first and edit later, I create better content — much better.

The ideas flow without interruption. I don’t get stuck back-tracking and perfecting. I discover things as I go.

In his book “Steal Like an Artist,” Austin Kleon suggests you step away from the computer when creating a “first draft.” He says:

“The computer is really good for editing your ideas, and it’s really good for getting your ideas ready for publishing out into the world, but it’s not really good for generating ideas. There are too many opportunities to hit the delete key. The computer brings out the uptight perfectionist in us — we start editing ideas before we have them. “

I agree.

Speaking of “Steal Like an Artist,” you’re invited to join us when we discuss the book at The Mastermind Book Club.

Each month, Ted Prodromou and I choose a great book for Club members to read and discuss. On the fourth Thursday of the month (TODAY, Thursday, April 25), we meet live on Zoom to discuss the book.

The Club is free to joinĀ here. Members receive multiple notices about the event (with the Zoom link).
