2 Pointers to Plow Past Writer’s Block

writers block

Yesterday I emailed you a cautionary tale about a job-seeker who caused a pee-pee spill at 7-Eleven (If you missed it, search for subject line: “Urine trouble”).

I shared that story in another email back in 2018.

Many of the people on my list today received that email.

But none wrote yesterday and said, “Hey! You told that story before.”

Reminds of of Pointer #21 in the Story Power Profit Pack that says:

Repeat Old Stories I have a bunch of stories I like to tell repeatedly. The one about the time my son and I went fishing and he caught 47 trout while I caught 2. Or the one about Groundhog Day and Ned. Or the one about my client Richard and his mom’s strawberry shortcake…I don’t repeat stories a week or even a month after I told them. But I might repeat a story once a year. Sometimes with a slightly different takeaway. But often with the same point each time. If it’s a good story, your audience will enjoy it each time. (Think television reruns, a movie you’ve seen five times, or the book you’ve read more than once).

Profit Pack Pointer #20 offers similar advice:

Make the Same Point Over and Over With Different Stories I have a finite list of ideas, insights, tools, tips, and other valuable things to share with my audience. Same goes for you. What happens when you’ve run through the list? Share the same insight — with a different story. Example: A few weeks after I first sent the Ned email (see Pointer #16) to my list, I wrote another email/post about a LinkedIn cold caller who pitched his product as “perfect” for me, even though he knew nothing about me. Same lesson. Different story. If I delivered lessons with another boring info-only, “blah, blah, blah” lecture, I couldn’t rehash that idea a few weeks later. (No one likes to sit through the same lecture over and over again.) But with stories, you can rehash points over and over again because they always feel fresh.

Put those pointers in your pipe and smoke ’em…

…if you want to overcome writer’s block and consistently create captivating content with greater ease and comfort.
