Why Sell Your Soul? Do this Instead…

In the early 1930s, Robert Johnson was a good guitarist.

But he wasn’t great. He wasn’t a stand-out. No one imagined he would be the “King of the Delta Blues.”

Johnson was just another nobody, struggling to break through in Mississippi juke joints.

Then he disappeared.

No one heard from him for months.

When he came back, he was a different man.

He walked into a club, picked up a guitar — and jaws dropped.

His fingers danced. His voice haunted. His music cut through.

The man was transformed.

People couldn’t explain it.

So they invented a myth:

They said he went to a lonely crossroads at midnight and sold his soul to the devil in exchange for supernatural talent.

Helluva a story. But it ain’t true.

Here’s what really happened…

Johnson didn’t make a deal with the devil.

He made a deal with himself.

He found a mentor — blues master Ike Zimmerman. He practiced obsessively. He studied. He refined.

He leaned into what made him different, not what made him sound like everyone else.

He disappeared so he could do the deep, quiet work of reinvention.

When he returned, he didn’t just play better.

He played like no one else ever had.

And he stood out as the best — The King.

That’s the true story.

The devil-at-the-crossroads tale makes for great movies and songs.

But I’ll take the true story every day of the week…

…because it inspires.
