Why Prospects Find You Then Flee — and How to Fix It

linkedin

Here’s a cautionary tale about LinkedIn…

…and why you must power-up your profile…

…even if you rarely spend time on the platform.

Yesterday, I met a guy named Bill who’s trying to ramp up his tutoring business.

He struggles to generate leads and land clients. And he described those struggles while sitting on the “hot seat” at a mastermind group I attended.

During the hot-seat, I Googled: “Bill {Last Name} tutor.”

The TOP result: His LinkedIn profile.

And (cue the chirping crickets) that profile is a ghost town.

Bill has 74 connections. No activity in months. One post in the past year. Four posts ever.

And that’s not the worst of it.

His headline (the part immediately under his name) says: “Independent Business Owner at {Business Name}”

(YAWN!)

Not a word about whom he helps. Not a word about outcomes he delivers.

Compare that to my LinkedIn headline:

“Experts who want to serve more & better clients, you can fire up prospects and inspire them to hire you… with story-powered content that’s simple to create. I’ll show you how.”

Or Dean Isaacs’ headline:

“B2B businesses hire us to help identify and remove their revenue road blocks, so they can grow their sales and scale their businesses with less stress and more predictability”

Last week, Dean and I hosted a 5in25 training (5 tips in 25 minutes) called 5 Ways to Turn LinkedIn from a Time-Waster to a Business-Builder.

The first tip: “Power-up your profile to establish credibility and value”

And the first step we recommend to power-up your profile: “Focus your headline on RESULTS, not job titles”

Here’s the first slide from our presentation…

Why focus on results, not job titles? Because…

→ Your prospects BUY outcomes, not job titles… ←

…especially if your job title is “Independent Business Owner.”

And even if you — like Bill — don’t pay attention to your LinkedIn profile, your prospects will find you there…

…because Google sends them there.

If you have a yawn-inducing profile, you’re driving prospects away when they search for you and land on LinkedIn…

…and you won’t even know it.
