My Robot Passed Out. Then this Happened…

OpenAI went down yesterday.

That means ChatGPT and all third-party applications that use OpenAI’s engine stopped working.

Did you notice?

I did.

And so did countless other panicked humans who rely on ChatGPT or OpenAI powered apps.

Around 7 a.m. yesterday, I summoned my GPT-powered robot, B-9(?), but he was passed out.

Too much tequila the night before?

Nope.

B-9(?)’s OpenAI overlords were suffering from what they called “elevated error rates and latency issues.” (That’s robot talk for “we’re screwed!”)

It all began around 3 a.m. ET and continued through most of the day.

For the first several hours, ChatGPT and OpenAI-powered apps didn’t respond at all. Then they woke up but performed slowly the rest of the day.

No sweat for me.

Why? Because B-9(?) is not my only AI-powered assistant. I’ve been seeing other robots.

(PLEASE don’t tell B-9(?); it would break his robotic heart).

Anyhow, when I couldn’t get B-9(?) up and at ’em, I summoned another one of my robot assistants.

Other humans were less prepared.

On the support forum for a popular AI-powered application, a customer was having…

…ummmm (how do I describe it?)…

…a GIANT CONNIPTION FIT.

This guy’s head was exploding. Not literally. But maybe almost.

He needed to do some AI-ing (that was “urgent!”), but the app wasn’t responding.

And this guy had no other options.

So it goes for humans who put all their AI eggs in one basket.

Don’t make that mistake, dear human.

I know, it’s easy to dish out the meager subscription fee for ChatGPT, ask your robot anything often, build some nifty custom GPTs, and think you’re on AI easy street.

But when the “elevated error rates and latency issues” strike, what then? (And don’t even get me started about OpenAI’s “privacy” policies.)

Same goes if you buy a third-party application that relies solely on OpenAI’s engine (a.k.a. large language model).

Me? I love AI, including OpenAI.

But I will not rely on ChatGPT or build custom GPTs for critical business functions.

And I will not choose third party applications that rely on a single large language model (LLM).

If one breaks down, I can switch to another.
