Let’s Resolve to Do This…

1250x672

It’s the first week of the new year, and it’s J.R.R. Tolkien’s birthday (Jan. 3). Seems like a good time for this resolution:

Embrace conflict without contempt.

Tolkien and his literary pals — including C.S. Lewis — inspire my resolve.

Tolkien (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings) and Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia) were colleagues and fierce competitors.

In the 1930s and 40s, they were members of a literary club called The Inklings at Oxford University.

Members discussed each other’s works-in-progress. They offered each other encouragement and delivered unvarnished critiques.

Tolkien and Lewis had plenty of conflicts. But no contempt.

Theirs was conflict — sometimes bitter — between two strong-willed, sharp-tongued combatants. But they acted with respect.

Legend has it: Tolkien might not have have finished The Lord of the Rings trilogy if not for Lewis criticizing, encouraging, and nagging him.

When conducted with mutual respect, conflict leads to creative breakthroughs. When conducted with contempt, conflict destroys.

I’ve seen too much contempt and too little respect. The closed-minded have displaced the curious. Tellers outnumber listeners. So many enemies. So little empathy.

Let’s resolve to change that. Let’s resolve to act with respect, curiosity, listening, and empathy…

…and see what breakthroughs result.
