Class Action Park
In a sleepy northern New Jersey community not far from New York City, a crooked stock trader named Gene Mulvihill built an amusement park in the 1980s. He was banned from Wall Street, and “Action Park” in Vernon Township, NJ was his scheme to make a few bucks.
The problem: Mulvihill didn’t hire experienced engineers to design the rides. He designed some himself. Or he accepted ill-conceived designs from others.
Teenagers flocked to the park that included death-defying water slides, alpine slides, go karts, speed boats and other high-action attractions.
The problem: Many were injured. A few didn’t survive.
HBO’s “Class Action Park” tells the story. On one hand, it’s a story of a bold businessman who had a “vision” and went for it. But Mulvihill is not a business roll-model. Most of the lessons here land in the “don’ts” column of your Dos-and-Don’ts tally for business creation.
This is an entertaining and sad story.

Never Split the Difference
Chris Voss was was the lead international kidnapping negotiator for the Federal Bureau of Investigation before becoming a business coach and consultant.
Never Split the Difference is wildly entertaining and informative book.
Voss shares detailed accounts of his FBI days. With each story, he reveals valuable lessons that will make you a better negotiator — whether you’re finalizing an important business deal or trying to convince your kid to clean their room.
This is one of the rare business books that I call a page-turner.
Words to Ponder…
…From Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan turns 80 today (May 24, 2021). Here are two things he said:
“A hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with his freedom.”
“There is nothing so stable as change.”
