Warning: Do not Make this Email Marketing Mistake

A cautionary tale about email marketing gone wrong…
Waaaayyyy back when, I signed up for Andy’s email list after I met him at a networking event.
He’s an accountant with some interesting insights on how to manage finances and keep the IRS at bay.
Yesterday, I received an email from him with a useful tip.
That’s the good news.
The bad news: It was the first time I heard from him in 423 days.
FOUR HUNDRED AND TWENTY-THREE DAYS? Yikes!
I don’t know why Andy waited 14 months between emails.
But I know this: When you send infrequently…
- Prospects tune out and move on. (Less engagement = fewer sales)
- Your emails are more likely to land in the spam folder.
- More of your emails will bounce.
I founded an email marketing software company in 2001. For a quarter century, I’ve witnessed the power of email marketing to nurture prospects and generate sales.
And I’ve heard all the reasons business leaders send infrequently — even though it works when done well.
The two most common reasons:
- They fear they’ll annoy subscribers if they send too much.
- They want to send more, but they struggle to create content consistently without getting stuck.
Do either of these ring a bell for you?
Here’s the truth:
You’ll annoy subscribers only if you send annoying emails.
If your emails are boring, information-only, same-as-everyone-else snooze-fests, subscribers will run for the hills – no matter how many or how few you send.
You have to create unique, informative, AND entertaining emails.
Which leads to #2…
How can you do that consistently without getting stuck?
Step 1: Read my book, Story Power Marketing (Proven Methods to Create Client-Attracting, Profit-Generating Content — Without Getting Stuck)
In her 5-star Amazon review, Lizzie said this about the book:
“For content marketers, knowing what will resonate with your target audience can be difficult to predict and hard to explain. This book walks you through a process called the P.L.A.N. to help you take stories from life or observation and spin them into content that’s relevant and approachable for your audience. Ever get stuck not knowing what to write? This easy-to-read book has techniques to help you get un-stuck and your creativity flowing.”
