How to Talk to Veterans About War

Today is Memorial Day—a time to honor and remember the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. It’s also a good time to honor and respect those who served and came home from war.

Wes Moore is one of those soldiers.

In his TED Talk, “How to Talk to Veterans About War,” he shares his personal journey—from joining the Army to pay for college to serving as a paratrooper in Afghanistan. Moore delves into the complexities veterans face upon returning home and challenges us to move beyond the standard “thank you for your service.” He emphasizes the importance of genuine conversations, understanding, and empathy in bridging the civilian-military divide.

This Memorial Day, consider taking a moment to watch Moore’s talk. It’s a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made and the ongoing journeys of those who’ve served.

John Carlton is among the all-time great copywriters. But this isn’t a copywriting manual.

This is a guide for business and life to…

…well, you see the title.

Funny, wise, and practical, this is one of those books I’ve read multiple times. I find something new every time I re-read it.

Speaking of “The Entrepreneur’s Guide…,” that’s the June selection of the Mastermind Book Club, and you’re invited to join other club members on Thursday, June 5 at 2:30 p.m. ET to discuss the book.

Every month, Ted Prodromou and I choose a great business book for members to read. We usually meet on the fourth Thursday each month. But scheduling conflicts have pushed this meeting to a special date.

You can attend these meetings for free, but you have to join the Club.

After you join here, you’ll receive notices with the Zoom link in advance of the meeting.

📚 The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien

Every year around Memorial Day, I find myself coming back to The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien.

The Things They Carried depicts the men of Alpha Company: Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Rat Kiley, Mitchell Sanders, Norman Bowker, Kiowa, and the character Tim O’Brien, who has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at the age of forty-three.

It’s one of those books that doesn’t feel like a book. More like a memory. A conversation. A quiet punch to the gut.

It’s about soldiers in Vietnam—but it’s not just a war story. It’s about fear, friendship, guilt, love, and what people carry — physically, emotionally, spiritually.

Some chapters are hard to read. Some are unexpectedly tender. All of it feels honest.

If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it. If you have, maybe this weekend’s a good time to pick it up again.

It’s a powerful way to remember, not just the sacrifices, but the people behind them.
