Why Your Origin Story Bores ’em Stiff

Over on Facebook the other day, a bunch of coaches were moaning and groaning about marketing that turns them off. Webinars overloaded with boring origin stories.
Linda started the thread and said, “OMG, I’m on another webinar where we are 45+ minutes in and the talk is still all about this guy and his ‘experience.’ I wish they would just get to the point of the webinar. I don’t give a shit about all this other stuff, or about your family and your pets and what not. I don’t even care about your bogus hero’s journey anymore.”
Full disclosure: In my webinars, I often include a picture of my family, including my crazy-doodle, Moose.
But I don’t go on and on and on about it.
I agree with Linda. Here’s my take, from page 17 of my bestselling book, Story Power Marketing:
Many “experts” say storytelling begins and ends with your “origin story.” But too many aspiring story-sellers dish out “me-me-me” origin stories. They tell the “interesting” tale of the garage where they invented some widget. They tell, in excruciating detail, how they clawed their way out of some ditch. They tell-tell-tell all about themselves. But they don’t make it sound familiar.
When you start with “look-at-me” stories, audiences tune out and move on. Everyone yawns because they don’t see themselves in those stories. If your story sounds familiar to prospects, they turn on and tune in.
That leads us to Story Power Principle No. 1: Keep the focus on prospects’ emotional journeys.
