Marketing Doesn’t Have to Be a Guessing Game. Here’s The Key…

Here’s something I didn’t know until Melissa and I visited Pompeii last week during our European vacation…

Ancient Romans loved to gamble with dice.

The archeologists who excavated Pompeii (buried under 15 feet of ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D.) founds lots of dice.

Here are some on display at the National Archeological Museum in Naples.

In a wine bar in the heart of Pompeii, archeologists also unearthed a painting depicting men playing a dice game.

Gambling wasn’t just for the little people, either. Roman emperors loved to roll the dice.

Emperor Augustus admitted in one of his letters that he accumulated large gambling debts. Nero loved to gamble — before he burned Rome to the ground. And Emperor Commodus plundered the state treasury and then tried to replenish it by turning his palace into a casino.

Here’s the funny thing about all this dice rolling…

Gambling was illegal in ancient Rome.

(Oh! The irony. I guess Roman emperors operated just like modern-day politicians — “Do as I say, not as I do!”)

Speaking of gambling…

It can be fun to roll the dice with your buddies at a wine bar…

…or to win a few denarii at the emperor’s casino.

But rolling the dice is a dangerous game when you try to grow your business.

Yet that’s what you’re doing if you conduct marketing tactics without a clear, proven strategy. You roll the dice. You gamble. And, odds are you’ll lose — if you gamble and guess.

I talk about it in my soon-to-be-published book, Story Power Marketing, on pages 8 and 9:

I see experts who spend countless hours on social media. They dish out piles of content, hoping to attract and engage prospects. They throw emails, social posts, and videos against the wall and hope something sticks. And when it doesn’t work, they throw some more, or they give up.

These experts have so much to offer their clients. They know their stuff. But their content falls flat. Prospects yawn and turn elsewhere. The experts think, “Now what?”

When the occasional prospect tunes in and buys, the expert wonders, “How did that happen?” When things work, they wonder, “What made the difference?” When things don’t work, they wonder, “What went wrong?”

Marketing feels like a guessing game, a gamble, something beyond their control. If they roll the dice enough, if they hustle, if they send and post more and more and more and more and more content, if they pitch and prod enough, they may ring some sales.

But they’ll pay the price.
