Thomas Edison’s Loss… Your Gain

The first thing Thomas Edison patented was a total flop.

It was an “electric vote-recorder,” designed to speed up vote-counting in legislative halls.

It worked like this: Each legislator had a switch at their desk to cast a “yes” or “no” vote. The votes were transmitted to a central device that recorded results immediately and accurately.

It was an impressive do-dad that worked perfectly.

And it might have made Edison rich, except for one little thing:

No one wanted it.

Edison’s partner in the venture, Dewitt Roberts, took the vote-recorder to Washington, demonstrated it before a committee of Congress, and got this response from the committee’s chairman: “If there is any invention on earth that we don’t want down here, that is it.”

Turns out Edison was addressing a “problem” nobody wanted to solve. Lawmakers liked the slow pace of roll-call voting. It gave them time to filibuster legislation or lobby colleagues to change their votes.

Edison would have known that if he did some research before he built the thing and applied for the patent.

Which leads us to the moral of this story: Do your research…

…before you create a product or service…

…before you craft your offer…

…before you write a line of marketing copy.
