I Can’t Mail You a Baby, But I Can Mail You This…

mail

It’s June 13. A dark day in American history.

On this day in 1920, the killjoys in the U.S. government outlawed the practice of sending babies through the mail.

Back in the day — here in the land of stars, stripes, and questionable judgment — you could suit up the kiddos in their Sunday best, stick a few stamps on their jackets, and hand them over to the nearest post office.

The local mail person would take it from there.

The glory days of baby postal delivery begin in 1913 when the U.S. Post Office Department introduced “parcel post.”

Before then, private companies handled package delivery, and it was unreliable (and, for a baby, a tad unsafe).

When the government took over, they allowed the shipment of “harmless live animals.”

Some enterprising, penny-pinching parents figured their offspring checked those boxes:

Harmless? Check.

Live? (Check.)

Animal (You betcha!)

Days after parcel delivery began, the Beagues family in Ohio bought 15 cents in stamps and $50 of insurance coverage (price unknown) to mail their infant son to his grandmother’s house a mile away.

After that, there were at least six instances of people mailing children.

In 1914, the Pierstorff family paid 53 cents for stamps, fastened them to six-year-old May’s coat, and sent her by Railway Mail train to her grandparent’s house 73 miles from her Idaho home.

In 1915, a woman shipped her six-year-old daughter from Florida to Virginia – a 720-mile trip that cost 15 cents in stamps.

Later that year, Maud Smith’s grandparents shipped her 40 miles through Kentucky to visit her sick grandmother.

On June 13, 1920, s bureaucratic buzz-killer named John C. Coons (the First Assistant Postmaster General) banned KidMail.

Ugh… Now if you wanted to ship junior off to grandma and grandpa’s or summer camp, you had to carry them there yourself or spring for a train ticket.

What a pain!

But here’s some good news:

You can still ship BOOKS via parcel post.
