Why Step 5 Failed

1250x672

My wife’s great-great-grandfather was a college kid when he decided to overthrow the German government.

In 1833, Adolph Wislizenus and a band of student revolutionaries stormed a castle in Frankfurt.

The plan seemed solid. Sneak up on a few arsenals. Capture the soldiers. Take the guns. Hand them to the people. Watch the government fall.

Steps one through four went fine.

Step five failed.

From Adolph’s biography:

The arms captured at the arsenal were distributed among the immense crowd attracted by the scattering shots fired… (The revolutionaries) called upon the people to seize the arms and establish the Republic. “Help yourselves, gentlemen, don’t be bashful,” cried one of Adolph’s comrades, as he handed out the arms to the gaping mob. “Today we are having a revolution all over Germany.” An hour later he was shot dead, refusing to surrender…The people were not ripe for revolt. The blow struck them unawares. A few, indeed, took arms, but most of these dropped them soon and furtively glided away.

The students were certain they had something nobody could refuse. Topple a rotten government. Build a republic. Freedom.

Sure, there was risk. You might get shot. You might rot in a prison cell. But that’s the cost of a revolution, right?

The people shrugged and went home. They weren’t ready to buy what the students were selling.

In business, we have a name for that. Failed market research.

Research your market, top to bottom. Learn everything you can about your prospects. Their problems. Their dreams. Learn it before you try to sell them anything.

If nobody wants a revolution, call off the castle-storming.

The same idea applies to you.

I’m not telling you to start an uprising. I’m telling you to grow your business.

Which means designing products and services that solve the problems your market actually has and deliver the outcome they actually want.

Don’t build the thing until you’ve confirmed there’s a problem worth solving and a dream worth fulfilling. If you can’t confirm it, don’t build it.

All that research pays you twice, by the way. Once when you build. Again when it’s time to sell.

In my free report “9 Secrets to Create Client Attracting Content,” I lay it out in secret #5:

“Your stories must evoke emotional transformations. They must show how your prospects feel on both ends of their journeys. From confused to clear. From frightened to courageous. From lonely to loved. From stuck to soaring.”

That’s one secret to create powerful, memorable, business-building content. Get all nine secrets here.
