šŸ“Ā To be heard (by Seth Godin)

Another tiny but powerful post from Seth Godin — about customer service and how so many businesses get it wrong.

My favorite line: “When we depersonalize our interactions and work to minimize the time spent and use a refund or policy to ā€˜make it right’, we forget what service is usually for.”

šŸ“šĀ The Persuasion Story Code

What kinds of stories move people to say ā€œyesā€ā€”to sign the deal, buy the product, or embrace a new idea?

David Garfinkel is among the world’s great copywriters and writing teachers. In “The Persuasion Story Code” he opens the vault.

Book cover titled The Persuasion Story Code: The Magic of Conversational Storytelling by David Garfinkel. The background is blue with yellow and white text and a speech bubble with icons representing communication.

He shares the real-world stories that have generated millions of dollars, sealed business-defining agreements, and shifted the way entire industries think.

He doesn’t just show you the stories. He walks you through, step by step, how to craft them for yourself.

“The Persuasion Story Code” is the October selection for The Mastermind Book Club. Read the book. Then join usĀ Tuesday, October 21Ā to discuss the book live — with the author in the room. You have to be a member to attend. You can joinĀ hereĀ for free.

šŸŽ„Ā Mastermind Book Club with Barry Kleiman

Speaking of the Mastermind Book Club…

Last week, the Club members met to discuss “The Playground Principles” by Barry Kleiman with the author in the room.

Wow! What a great discussion we had.

Barry is a self-described “74-year-old kid from a Philly playground” who takes the principles he learned on asphalt basketball courts and applies them to life and business.

In our Book Club meeting, we discussed:

  • The importance of human connection.
  • How to compete and disagree without becoming enemies.
  • The power of face-to-face interaction.
  • Victor Frankl and “the monument of your existence.”

…and so much more.

We usually don’t share our Book Club meeting videos with the public. You have to be a member (it’sĀ free to join) to attend and (in most cases) to see the replays.

But today, I’m making an exception. Here’s the replay. Enjoy!

šŸ“ŗĀ Why Bother Asking for Referrals

From Dan Kennedy’s archives… A long discussion he had with my friend and marketing mentor Dave Dee re: referrals.

Think referrals just happen because you’re a ā€œgood personā€ who does ā€œgreat workā€? Wrong.

Dan and Dave tear apart the fantasy that referrals magically appear out of thin air. The truth? You’re owed nothing. If you’re not getting a steady stream of referrals, it’s not because your clients are stingy. It’s because you don’t have a system—a real referral machine—working for you.
