What Sets You Apart?

I bumped into a marketing agency owner who wants help finding new clients.

He posted his cry for help in and online forum.

He described his claim to fame: “What sets us apart is that we strive to offer quality services at affordable rates.”

Ummmmmmmm, no. “Quality services at affordable rates” is not set-you-apart stuff.

This guy needs better positioning. He needs better stories.

But most in the forum focused on tactics.

“Pick up the phone and start calling,” said one in the forum.

“Cold emailing the right way. Dm if you need more info,” pitched another.

“Scrape prospects via LinkedIn” and then cold-call them with direct messages, advised another — who just happened to sell a LinkedIn scraping service.

(Sigh!)

That poor agency owner.

The tactics-first crowd bombards him with promises, enticing him with shiny tech tools. (So many shiny tech squirrels to chase. So little time.)

In my soon-to-be published book, I say, “(Those tools and tactics) wonā€™t work if you create the same old, boring, ‘blah, blah, blah’ content. If you dish out feeble content, youā€™ll generate feeble results — even if you deliver them through the fanciest, most powerful marketing tools in the galaxy. Iā€™ve seen it happen time after time after time.”

So before you pick up the phone and start calling, or cold email, or scape prospects from LinkedIn…

…figure out what truly sets you apart. Focus on the content you’ll deliver through those tools. Power-up your stories.
