Dumb Holiday Thief & Great Holiday Offer

My favorite holiday shopping story…

The setting: A big box store in Belleville, Illinois in 1993.

A customer leaves her credit card behind after buying a bunch of holiday gifts.

Instead of returning the card to the customer, the clerk keeps the card and uses it to pay for a holiday shopping spree at the same store.

She might have gotten away with it if not for one costly mistake:

When she rings up the sales, she enters her employee discount number. 🫤

I was working as a reporter at the Belleville News-Democrat at the time, and I helped ourĀ cops-and-courtsĀ reporter write the article about this.

I suggested we open the article like this:

“Why steal at full price when you can steal at a discount?Ā That’s what {insert name of dumb criminal here} may have been thinking when she…”

Our editor (a.k.a. “King Killjoy”) said “No way.”

He rewrote the opening in the typical, boring, common style they teach in journalism school. (“A Belleville woman was arrested Saturday and charged with felony theft after she allegedly… blah, blah, blah…”)

What a shame.
