This Made Me Laugh…
Last month, a burger joint in Toronto added a new section to its Ubereats and Doordash delivery menus…
…with items named after office supplies.
You can order a āBasic Steel Staplerā (actually a Fortune Burger).
Throw in a side of āBraided HDMI Cableā (Classic Fries).
Want parmesan on those fries? Then order the āUSB Wired Mouse.ā
Check out the Doordash menu. Itās still there now.
On social media, Good Fortune Burger created video posts that āencouragedā customers to write-off their burger and fries as a business expense.
One video showed a picture of a basic steel stapler on a plate with the heading, āEXPENSE THIS.ā Then the image flips to a picture of a loaded cheeseburger with the heading āEAT THIS.ā
The hashtag for the social campaign (and the name of the new menu section): #RECEATS
Get it?
I think thatās hilarious.
But some people didnāt get the joke.
I guess thereās a fine line between āamusing marketing campaignā and ācriminal inducement to commit fraud.ā
Hereās what one killjoy had to say in the comments section of an article describing the campaign:
āI hear they serve decent burgers in prison. Cuz that’s where you’re headed if you follow this advice and defraud CRA.ā
CRA…as in Canada Revenue Agency — that countryās version of the IRS.
Implied warning: Donāt mess with CRA!
Another Captain Obvious wrote: āUbereats and Good Fortune Burger are not office supply companies. It doesn’t pass the first test of an allowable expense and immediately looks like fraud.ā
And then this from Sgt. Self-Serious: āIf you claim these items as expenses on your income tax, be prepared to be charged by CRA! If you claim them on your company’s expenses or petty cash, be prepared to be chastised (or fired if it is not your first warning).ā
Remember Sgt. Hulka in the movie Stripes? Then you know what Hulka would say to these humorless hand-wringersā¦
āLighten up Francis!!!ā
Jon Purdy, Good Fortune Burgerās Director of Operations, confirmed his company does not truly want customers to commit fraud. “We just wanted an opportunity to put a smile on some people’s faces and have them have a little bit of a giggle,” he said.
Mission accomplished for most of us who got the joke…
…including this guy who commented, āI’ll have the āMeeting With Clientā and a side of āConsultation,ā and an order of āLetter to Opposing Counsel.ā Thanks!ā
Or this guy: āThey are just having some fun! Great way to get a conversation about a delicious burger started.ā
And thatās the real point.
Good Fortune Burger is just having fun. And having fun is good for business.
Newspapers are writing about it. People are talking about it. They made us giggle. They lightened up our day.
Theyāre connecting with customers and prospects in ways they never have before.
Humor and having fun does that.
Humor and fun will sell more burgers.
Too bad CRA is going to put them out of business and throw āem all in jail.
OK…Iāll say it…just in case…Iām just kidding about CRA and jail. Those burgers will still be there when you visit Toronto. Iām going to get one next time Iām there. Itās the least I can do after they made me smile ear-to-ear.
