Women and Vegans Welcome Here…

When Charlotte was 20 and just getting started as a writer, she sent one of her creations to England’s top poet.

Poet Laureate Robert Southey liked Charlotte’s work.

But in a letter dated March 12, 1837, he wrote, “Literature cannot be the business of a womanā€™s life: & it ought not to be. The more she is engaged in her proper duties, the less leisure she will have for it, even as an accomplishment & a recreation.”

That’s the way it worked back then. Literature was a men’s-only club.

But Charlotte wouldn’t take “no” for an answer.

If she and her sisters had put away their pens and engaged only in their “proper duties,” Charlotte BrontĆ« would never have written Jane Eyre. Her sister Emily would never have written Wuthering Heights. And English literature would be far less rich.

Fast forward a century to the years when my mother and grandmothers came of age. Women in business suites? Rare. Women entrepreneurs? Even rarer.

Business was a men’s only club. Men brought home the bacon. Women fried it up in a pan.

Times have changed — for the better.

When I launch Club Storyville later this month, everyone will be welcome. Men from Mars. Women from Venus. Earthlings. Vulcans. Kryptonians. Come one. Come all.

The doors will be open for anyone who wants to create captivating, stand-out emails, social posts, websites, and other content…

…so they can land more clients…

…and bring home more bacon — or tofu (carnivores, vegetarians, and vegans are welcome).

Doors open this month. Stay tuned for details.
