The Rerun RX for Writer’s Block
Yesterday, email marketing master Laura Belgray broadcast a rerun…
…and I loved it.
It was a story about a Grammar-Cop Attorney who criticized Laura for using the phrase “‘Looking forward to hearing back” in an email.
That “…is NOT a sentence. It is a sentence fragment,” Grumpy Grammar Puss sniffed.
Laura shared the story to make a point about email writing. Write like you talk, she counseled. “You also need to get in your ideal client’s head and use the language they use.”
I loved that email when she sent it in July 2022. (So much so, I wroteĀ an emailĀ about it the next day).
When I opened the email she sent yesterday, I recognized it as the same story instantly.
And I didn’t mind. In fact, I gobbled it up and savored every bite.
The moral of this story?
When you write story-powered emails, you always have something to send. You never get stuck.
There’s always another anecdote you can find to deliver a valuable lesson.
And if you can’t think of a new story to share, you’re not stuck. Rerun one from last season.
I did it earlier this month when I wrote about a conversation with my son. He’s launching a new business, and I offered him some mindset advice.
InĀ that email, I re-ran a story I told two years ago about how I overcame my resistance to mindset work.
I’ve grown my list significantly since then. So several subscribers never received the first one. Others who were on the list back then may not have read the story when I first broadcast it.
And those who read it before and opened the rerun story this month?
No one wrote to say, “Hey, Tom! What gives!? You told the same story back in 2021. How dare you send me a rerun!”
Several subscribers replied with positive feedback — including one who told me he enjoyed the story when I told it in 2021.
That’s the power of storytelling.
Think about it. How many times have you watched your favorite episode of Seinfeld or ER or Gilmore Girls.
(I’ve watched every episode of Gilligan’s Island at least three times. And I lived to tell about it.)
You saw the Harry Potter movies in the theater…
…and you watched them again on your TV.
Same goes with Jason Bourne, Dorothy and Toto, and Indiana Jones.
Reruns captivate audiences.
