Let’s Work on Our Connections

After posting on LinkedIn last week about all the cold-call connection requests I get, I heard from Scott Kolbe who co-owns a marketing agency with his wife, Lauren. He shared this post that Lauren published on the Kolbeco blog about people posting happy birthday wishes on the Facebook feed of a friend…

…who had died. Those “connected friends” hadn’t been connected enough.

It’s such an excellent post.  Lauren writes, “…on the surface, we imagine we’re so connected through technology. But the reality is that many of us aren’t connected at all. Let’s do something about that.”

Then she goes on to describe what it really means to connect.

It’s a great, short read.

Nomadland is a Haunting, Powerful Movie

I’m a big fan of Frances McDormand (Fargo, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and more).

Her latest role: Fern in “Nomadland,” which opened last week in theaters and can be streamed on Hulu.

Warning: This is a dark movie. It tells the story of people displaced by the 2008 recession who travel the country in campers and vans because they can’t afford — or don’t want — a house of their own.

So don’t watch it if you’re in the mood for a rom-com.

But when you’re in the mood, I recommend this movie.

The filmmaking and storytelling is unique.

The themes are profound.

The movie is based on the nonfiction book of the same name by Jessica Bruder.

And it’s directed by Chloé Zhao (more on her below).

Washington’s Birthday Last week was the President’s Day federal holiday. But today is George Washington’s actual birthday. He was born on this day in 1732, and he once said:

We should not look back unless it is to derive useful lessons from past errors, and for the purpose of profiting by dearly bought experience.
