How to Grow Profits Without Scraping and Scrambling for New Leads
I met last week with a financial planner who wants to run a live seminar.
His plan: Attract new leads to the seminar, encourage attendees to schedule a free consultation, and convert those who sign-up into clients.
I asked: “And what about those who attend but don’t sign up for the consultation?”
“F%c#-’em,” he said.
I encouraged him to run email campaigns to nurture ALL seminar attendees — even those who don’t sign up for a consultation.
“Let’s just generate some leads and convert ’em asap. I don’t want to do all that nurture crap,” he barked.
I passed.
My prediction: He’ll find someone to run his seminar. He’ll land a few clients. But it won’t be enough. He’ll always scrape and scramble to find more and more and more leads — hoping that a small percentage will convert asap.
Meanwhile, his competitors who master that “nurture crap” will build stronger, more sustainable businesses — with less effort.
Yes, I said “less effort.”
How can that be?
Finding leads is time-consuming and expensive.
This planner was prepared to spend big bucks on advertising. Some of those leads are ready to buy now. Others may need his services later, but — for whatever reason — they’re not ready to sign-up for a consultation or his services.
The planner invests big bucks to buy a bucket. He trudges to the well-o’-leads and pays the well-master big bucks to fill up his bucket. He pours that bucket into his sales funnel, and lets all those who don’t sign up now slip through the bottom of the funnel. Then he takes his empty bucket and trudges back to the well.
(Exhausting and expensive)
For every one person who becomes a client “asap,” there may be 5 or 10 or 20 who were real prospects but disappeared.
It’s well worth the effort to stay in touch with those prospects. Because…
It costs far less to convert a prospect who already knows you than to find and convert a new lead who doesn’t know you.
If you constantly hunt for new leads without having a plan to nurture prospects who don’t buy ASAP, you’re choosing the most exhausting and expensive way to build a business.
Sure, you need to fill the funnel with new leads. But you don’t need to fill the funnel as often or with as many leads, if you nurture and convert prospects who know you.
Most businesses can increase revenue quickly without having to generate more leads.
And those that discover how to do this — how to maximize revenue from prospects in the funnel (and existing clients) — will dramatically improve ROI when they invest in more leads.
