How to Build a Bigger Email List (Santa-Style) 🎅🏻
You know that poem that begins “‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house…?”
Funny thing about that poem…
Before it appeared in The Troy Sentinel newspaper on this day (Dec. 23) in 1823, no one talked about a flying sleigh, or magical reindeer, or Santa dropping down the chimney.
All that stuff first appeared in that poem.
Here’s another funny thing about that poem.
There are only eight reindeer in it, not nine: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder (later changed to Donner), and Blitzen.
But no Rudolph.
The red-nosed reindeer wasn’t part of American holiday lore until 1939 when he became the star of a department store’s lead magnet.
Every year, Montgomery Ward in Chicago gave away a coloring book to entice children and their holiday-shopping parents to visit the store.
In 1939, the company decided to create the book in-house to save money.
Enter 34-year-old Robert L. May who spent most of his time writing Montgomery Ward catalog copy.
May later said he was a small, shy boy who “had known what it was like to be an underdog.”
So, naturally, he wrote a tale about an underdog reindeer who defies the odds to become the ninth — and most important — reindeer on Santa’s team.
In the book’s first year of publication, Montgomery Ward gave away 2.4 million copies.
That’s a lot of holiday shoppers.
And therein lies the lesson for you.

“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” will go down in history as one of the great ones.
