Escape the Thank You Spiral to Make Biz-building Connections

1250x672

Last night I watched an old episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm — the one where Larry gets caught in a thank you sprial.

Larry and Cheryl go to a wedding and give a nice gift to the newlyweds.

The couple sends a thank you note to Larry.

Larry leaves a voicemail for the couple thanking them for the thank you note.

The bride leaves a voicemail for Larry thanking him for thanking them for the thank you note.

And now Larry is annoyed — caught in a thank you spiral he wishes to escape.

Is he supposed to thank the couple for thanking him for thanking them for the thank you note?

What’s the point?

When will it end?

And, even when it started with the first thank you note, was there any real human connection there, or was it just a robotic reflex? (Get gift → Send “thank you.”)

It’s funny because it’s true.

Reminds me of all the thanks I get from marketers.

“Thanks for subscribing.”

“Thanks for registering.”

“Thanks for buying.”

I guess it’s better than nothing.

But after a while, it all feels more like robotic reflex.

And when it begins to feel that way for your audience, you’ve lost the human connection that you need to land clients.

Be like Michael

Michael DeLon is better than anyone I know at connecting with people in unique and powerful ways.

None of that robotic reflex. Real thanks. Real connections.

Michael was my third-ever guest on my podcast, The Story Power Marketing Show, and we discussed what it takes to treat prospects and clients the right way so they connect you, buy from you, and refer you.
