Break-up Gone Wrong (A Cautionary Tale)

Remember that old Neil Sedaka song…?

Breaking up is hard to do 🎶

Tell me about it!

Last week, I tried to break up with a software company whose screen capture app I’d used since 2009.

Ninety minutes after I clicked the cancel button, I got an email that started like this:

“Hey There! How are you liking (our product) so far?”

(WTF!? I’m NOT liking the software. I just canceled.)

The email continued: “I’m reaching out to make sure you’re getting everything you need from the software, including support. We provide plenty of free resources to help guide your videos to greatness in record time!”

(Hmmmm. Now I worried. Maybe I hadn’t canceled. Maybe I accidentally clicked an upgrade button or purchased something else.)

But then the jilted software vendor came clean:

“I also encourage you to activate auto-renewal, so your catalyst for content creation is always ready to go. Just head to your subscriptions page and click ‘uncancel.’ It’s that easy.”

“Uncancel?!” No thanks.

It was easy enough to click the cancel button.

But getting you to accept the break up?

That’s hard to do.

We might have parted as friends. I might have even introduced you to people I know who would love and stick with you.

But now I’m just annoyed with you…

…not because you asked for one more chance…

…but because of the way you did it.

Read the room, dear.

Now is not the time to ask how I’m liking the product “so far.”

Now is not the time to make sure I’m getting everything I need.

Clearly, I’m not. We’re breaking up.

Wrong message at the wrong time.

Marketing automation gone awry.

↑ This is a cautionary tale ↑

If you want clients to love and stick with you…

…if you want to attract great prospects who hire and refer you…

…you have to deliver the right message at the right time.

Automation tools can help you save time.

But marketing automation will backfire if you pre-load messages that are impersonal and off-key.

You’ll come across as clueless and robotic, not a human to hire.

To become the human to hire in your niche, you need a gameplan around…

…MESSAGE (what content will attract qualified prospects and inspire them to buy?)…

…TECH (what tools will help me put those messages in front of the right people at the right time while saving time and eliminating hassles?)…

…TEAM (how do you gather and organize the right people you can trust to get the job done and free you up to focus on what you want to do?).

How do you create this gameplan?
