Let’s Remember the Lesser-known Everest Climber
On this day in 1953, Edmund Hillary became the first man to reach the summit of Mt. Everest.
One week later, Queen Elizabeth knighted the climber.
History remembers and honors Sir Edmund Hillary — especially in the Western Hemisphere.
Tenzing Norgay? Not so much.
“Who’s Tenzing Norgay?” you ask.
He’s the Sherpa who accompanied Hillary to the summit. He’s the guy who saved Hillary’s life a few days earlier.
Before they began their ascent, Hillary and Norgay were scaling a stretch above their camp. Just a day trip. Some exercise and practice before the big climb.
While returning to camp, Hillary fell into a crevasse. As the future Knight tumbled toward the bottom of the crevasse, Norgay secured Hillary’s rope with an ice axe. Hillary later said he would have been “smashed to smithereens” if not for Norgay’s quick thinking.
Hillary also couldn’t have reached the summit without Norgay’s help.
So on this anniversary, let’s give Edmund Hillary his due.
AND let’s celebrate the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay…
…the guy who had Hillary’s back…
…the guy who helped Hillary reach the summit.
Both men inspire me.
I want to reach summits.
AND I want to be the indispensable, trusted guide…
…the guy who has your back…
…the guy who helps you reach summits.
Let’s climb together (lots of options in the p.s. below)
