Cautionary Tale: Don’t Cast Your Net Unless You’re Ready to Process the Catch

My son Jacob makes his living as a commercial fisherman in southwest Alaska.


Sockeye salmon in Bristol Bay. 


This year, the salmon run will shatter records. 


Average sockeye run (2001-2020): 41.3 million fish.


2021 sockeye run: 66.1 million fish (a record). 


This year: 74 million and counting. 


And the season continues through July!


What a business bonanza, right!? 


Well…


…sort of…


…but…


…Jacob and his mates are shutting things down early. 


Turns out the processing companies don’t have enough storage space for all those fish. 


The fishing boats can catch the sockeye, but they have nowhere to drop them. 


So, instead, they keep their nets rolled up on deck while millions of sockeye swim by. 


Less profit for the fishers. Less profit for the processors. 


Reminds me of the business owner who hired me a few years back to power up his marketing. 


We generated new leads. We improved prospect engagement. We increased sales. 


And then the business owner pulled the plug. 


Turned out he wasn’t prepared for business growth. 


He and his team couldn’t keep up. They dropped balls. Missed deadlines. Made mistakes. 


Long-time customers complained. New customers canceled. 


What a waste of a successful marketing campaign! 


I learned from that experience.
