Why Great Copywriters Reject the “Hero’s Journey”
In Chapter 1 of his book The Persuasion Story Code, David Garfinkel says:
A friendly warning: You may have heard of a widely held theory that the only kind of story which works for persuasion in business is what is known as ‘the hero’s journey.’ While this complex, long-form narrative can work in persuasion, it rarely does. Especially when you look at how most people actually get convinced most of the time in real life.
(Artist’s rendering of me after reading that: 😍)
To create a persuasive “$tory,” you don’t need the hero’s journey.
Persuasion $tories that generate sales:
- May NOT have clearly defined beginnings, middles, and ends
- Don’t resemble the plots of movies, TV shows, novels, plays, or video games
- Are short and simple
That’s great news if you’ve ever sat in front of a blank screen, wondering how you’re going to recall the 12 stages of the hero’s journey so you can spit out an email.
Don’t bother with all that complexity.
Read The Persuasion Story Code which shows you how to write client-getting stories with simple frameworks and step-by-step instructions.
