What Would You Do If The Stories And Music Stopped

My friend Les Landes shared with me a story about stories. I’d like to share it with you.

It comes from the author Neil Gaiman who said:

“My cousin Helen…was in the Warsaw ghetto during World War II. She and a bunch of the girls in the ghetto had to do sewing each day. And if you were found with a book, it was an automatic death penalty. She had gotten hold of a copy of ‘Gone With the Wind’, and she would take three or four hours out of her sleeping time each night to read. And then, during the hour or so when they were sewing the next day, she would tell them all the story. These girls were risking certain death for a story. And when she told me that story herself, it actually made what I do feel more important. Because giving people stories is not a luxury. It’s actually one of the things that you live and die for.”

On the day Les sent this to me, I watched a news story about Afghanistan. The Taliban swept into Kabul that day, and music stopped. Music used to blare from storefronts and apartment windows. The city was alive with music before the Taliban returned. But under its strict interpretation of religious law, the Taliban bans music.

Books and music and stories — these are the things we create, the things that make us human. They bring us joy. They connect us.

When oppressors take away our books and silence our music, they cut threads that connect us. They kill joy. They dehumanize us.

People giving people stories is NOT a luxury. People sharing music is NOT a luxury.

Today, I count my blessings for stories and songs.

And I shed a tear for humans who must hide as they share stories and sing songs.
