Thomas Edison’s Biggest Flop

A man in a suit stands beside scientific instruments in an old laboratory, with shelves of bottles and equipment visible in the background.

Fun fact about Thomas Edison: He was obsessed with concrete.

Long after he invented the light bulb and phonograph, Edison tried to “reinvent” the American home.

Concrete houses. Concrete bathtubs. Concrete cabinets. Concrete furniture. Even concrete pianos.

Cost-effective. Durable. Fireproof. Permanent.

Edison built prototypes and molds. And then he tried to license the molds to manufacturers.

Great idea, except…

NO ONE WANTED THIS!

Reasons 1, 2, and 3: Concrete is heavy, uncomfortable, and ugly.

So Edison’s concrete venture crumbled soon after it started.

The moral of this story: When launching a product or a marketing campaign, get to know your target market and ask, “What do they want?”

Seems simple enough.

But Edison is not the only “genius” to go to market with products and pitches that miss the mark.

I see it all the time. Products that seemed like a great idea in the “lab” but make the market yawn.

Big marketing claims met by prospects who say, “So what?”

In The Story Power Profit Pack, I offer a fix for this:

“Focus first on PROSPECTS emotional journeys. Understand all you can about your prospects. Where are they now (frustrations, struggles, problems, pains)? Where do they want to go (dreams, aspirations, cravings)? And how can your products, services, or information enable them to journey from their before (where they are now) to their after (where they want to go)?”

The Profit Pack contains 52 strategies, tips, and tactics to transform your content from IGNORED TO ADORED so prospects tune in, turn on, and buy.
