The Tale of How I Became a “Story-seller”

storyteller

Here’s a story from my upcoming book — about my transformation from a hard-pitch sales guy to a “story-seller…”

I was sitting in my office at MarketVolt, the email marketing software company I founded in 2001. I was making some phone calls when our VP of Sales, Pat, bounded in.

Heā€™d come from a meeting where he pitched our software to a prospect named Jane. She was the marketing manager for a printing company, and she created and delivered emails for all of the sales reps.

After Pat walked her through the software, Jane jumped into his arms and gave him a bear hug. Tears streamed down her cheeks.

Jane HATED creating and sending emails. It was inefficient and time-consuming. It was boring. It was a hassle. It literally made her head hurt.

So when Pat revealed how she could automate the process, Jane knew everything was about to change. It wasnā€™t just her work processes transformed. Janeā€™s life transformed.

From time wasted to time saved. From headache and hassle to relief and satisfaction. From dread to excitement and anticipation. From difficult to easy.

After Pat told me about  Jane and the bear hug, I saw sales differently. We were not selling email marketing software.

We were selling the STORY. The story of lives transformed. Lives like Janeā€™s.

Our software enabled the transformation. But our software was NOT THE STORY.

So I stopped treating our software as the star. I put the spotlight on our prospects and clients. I focused on how they feel — before they choose us and after we transform their lives.

I started sharing stories…

In the book, I don’t describe the MarketVolt feature that made Jane cry happy tears.

I have a story to tell about that. But for now, I’ll let you chew on all of the above.

I’ll share the other story tomorrow.

It’s a tale about my days as an email marketing pioneer — and how one of the galaxy’s top copywriters reminded me recently that I have a treasure trove of experience, knowledge, and tips to share with you.

Tune in for that — same bat-time, same bat-channel.
