The Secret to Con-artistry (and Biz) Success
Remember that Leonardo DiCaprio movie “Catch Me if You Can” — the one about the con man Frank Abagnale?
After running away from home when he was 16, Abagnale posed as a Pan Am pilot.
Free airplane rides. Hotel stays and fancy dinners charged to his airline “expense account.”
No one caught on until he bounced one too many checks.
Same deal when he posed as a doctor, lawyer, and college professor.
I recently saw the real Abagnale on a Tonight Show rerun, interviewed by Johnny Carson in 1978.
After Abagnale told his story, Carson boiled down the secret to the con artist’s success:
“If you really look like you belong somewhere and you have a feeling of authority, people will almost accept you anyplace.”
So it goes for con artists.
So it goes for business leaders.
Show up with authority.
Act as if you belong.
People will accept, trust, and hire you.
Speaking of authority…
