The Oppenheimer Formula for Captivating Content

Over the weekend, Melissa and I saw Oppenheimer. The movie is 3 hours long, and we loved every minute.

Through Sunday it had earned $406 million worldwide. (Melissa and I are not alone.)

Once upon a time, studios were reluctant to release movies longer than TWO hours. Bean-counters at Paramount demanded that Francis Ford Coppola chop 30+ minutes from his first cut of The Godfather to make it under 120 minutes.

He refused, and his 135-minute film won the best-movie Oscar in 1972. It grossed more than $250 million ā€” more than any film that year and (at the time) more than any film ever.

I hear from a lot of word-counters who tell me long emails don’t work. Attention spans are short. People don’t have the patience to read a long email, they say.

My response: People don’t have the patience to read a BORING or IRRELEVANT email. Short or long doesn’t really matter.

I write long emails. I write short emails. Both work.
