How to Conquer Stage Fright

Darden

Powerful storytellers embrace and conquer stage fright.

Take Darden Smith.

He’s a singer-songwriter who has released 15 critically acclaimed albums and performed around the globe — including a concert in February 2019 at the venue I run, (ware)HOUSE Concerts in St. Louis.

He’s an author, too, who wrote a book I love called The Habit of Noticing — Using Creativity to Make a Life (and a Living).

Here’s what Darden Smith wrote about stage fright:

Everyone has bad days at work.
If you’re a performer, those memories happen in the spotlight.
It’s humiliating, but normal.

I start to conquer my stage fright when I realize that
No matter how prepared I am, I still make a lot of mistakes

It’s not a question of will I, but when I will mess up a song.
I laugh. Keep going.
My blunders become part of the show.
The audience usually doesn’t know the difference.
I spend most of my time helping people craft and deliver powerful stories so they can grow their businesses.

Those people are performers, just like Darden Smith, just like you…

…if you send emails to subscribers, publish stories on a blog, shoot videos for YouTube, or put posts on social media…You perform. You operate in the spotlight. And you will mess up.

The question for you: Will you laugh and keep going? Or will you leave the spotlight and refuse to return?

Darden has it right.

Those bad days at work are not as bad as we might fear. The humiliations are normal, and not as bad as we might fear. When we mess up, the consequences are not as great as we might fear. The audience usually doesn’t know the difference; or if they do, they judge less harshly than we might fear.

You can laugh at the blunders. You can choose to keep going.

If you do, you’ll be a confident storyteller and a successful story-seller.
