How to Attract & Convert Leads — Without Acrobatic Monkeys
When I read Professor Lucifer Gorgonzola Butts was born on this day 95 years ago…
…I knew I’d have to write an email about him.
Maybe I could joke that Lucifer Gorgonzola Butts is the guy who was kicked off an American Airlines flight this month for excessive, gorgonzola-esque farting.
(That story was all over my news feed this week.)
Or maybe I could make a few “Gorgonzola Butts” jokes…
…to make a point about the power of humor.
(Even the most serious business people should let down their professional guard and laugh a little in their content. Humor builds bonds).
But I’m hosting a masterclass (details and registrationĀ here) about lead magnets next week…
…and I wanted to write today’s email about that…
…so I have to forego the fart jokes and find a way to weave Lucifer Gorgonzola Butts into a business fable to promote my event.
Eureka! I Found it!
Turns out, Professor Butts is the invention of a cartoonist named Rube Goldberg. On this day in 1929, Goldberg launched a cartoon series called āThe Inventions of Professor Lucifer G. Butts.ā (Goldberg added the Gorgonzola part a few years later).
Professor Butts was an inventor who created elaborate contraptions to automate common tasks. Goldberg explained in his unpublished memo:
“In my cartoons Professor Lucifer Gorgonzola Butts invented elaborate machines to accomplish such Herculean tasks as shining shoes, opening screen doors, keeping moths out of clothes closets, retrieving soap in the bathtub and other innocuous problems. Only, instead of using the scientific elements of the laboratory, I added acrobatic monkeys, dancing mice, chattering false teeth, electric eels, whirling dervishes and other incongruous elementsā¦”
The cartoons were a hit…
…so much so that “Rube Goldberg machine” became part of our language.
In 1931, Rube Goldberg became the first “person” to be included in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as an adjective: “accomplishing by complex means what seemingly could be done simply.ā
What does this have to with my workshop and your business?
Most savvy business people know lead magnets are a great way to attract new prospects.
But many think lead magnets require “complex means” to launch.
So they skip lead magnets altogether…
…or they leave out key parts of the lead magnet process (such as email follow-up) so it no longer works as a business-building tool.
Both options are stinkier than the bluest blue cheese.
(And I HATE blue cheese!)
Good news:
You can launch a business-generating lead magnet without building a Rube Goldberg machine.
That’s the point of my masterclass:
How to Create Prospect-Attracting Lead Magnets AND Business-Generating Follow-Ups — Without Working Your Tail Off
(Details and registrationĀ hereĀ — or one-click, instant registration below).
I used to work my tail off when launching lead magnets. My lead magnet process looked like this…
But no longer. I have marketing automation tools that make the process simple.
(No acrobatic monkeys, dancing mice, chattering false teeth, electric eels, whirling dervishes, or birds.)
In the masterclass, I’ll share best strategies for designing and building a prospect-attracting lead magnets. And I’ll share the systems and tools I use to deliver the lead magnet, nurture prospects who request it, and turn those prospects into clients.
When: Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2:30 p.m. ET, 1:30 p.m. CT
Where: Live on Zoom (you’ll get the link when you register.

One last thing…
That image of the Rube Goldberg Lead Magnet Machine? My GPT-powered robot “B-9?” drew that.
I asked him how the machine works. Here’s his reply:
The Rube Goldberg machine depicted in the cartoon creates a lead magnet through a series of whimsical and complex steps:
1) Idea Generation: It starts with a writer thinking of an idea, symbolized by a light bulb appearing over their head.
2) Bird Activates Mechanism: This idea triggers a bird to peck a button.
3) Gears and Pulleys: The button sets in motion a series of gears and pulleys, creating a chain of mechanical movements.
4) Operating a Printing Press: These gears and pulleys turn a crank that operates a printing press.
5) Printing an eBook: The printing press produces an eBook, which is the physical representation of the lead magnet.
6) Triggering a Scale and Dominoes: The eBook then falls onto a scale. The weight of the eBook tips the scale, leading to a series of dominos falling over.
7) Final Step – Sending an Email Blast: The last domino in the sequence presses a key on a computer keyboard. This action sends an email blast containing the lead magnet to potential customers.
