How Atiba Persuaded Them to Pay $33 for a “Free” Book

Here’s a story with priceless principles for authors — or any business leaders — who want more leads and clients…

Yesterday, while discussing Atiba de Souza’s “The Delegation Trap” with The Mastermind Book Club, I announced you can find it on Amazon and even get a free version if you have Kindle Unlimited.

Then Atiba chimed in. “If you go to my actual website, thedelegationtrap.com, and you buy the book there (I think it’s $32 there on the website) you get a bunch of bonuses.”

Then he described one of the bonuses — an AI tool that helps supervisors sort through challenging situations with employees.

I asked everyone in the Zoom room whether they were tempted to pay $32 for a book they might otherwise get on Amazon for free, and everyone raised their hand.

Well played, Atiba.

Three important principles Atiba modeled:

1) Use your book (or other low-cost product) as a lead-magnet. If they buy the book on Amazon, you don’t get the customer data. When you offer the book on your website you do. And when you know who they are, they become a lead you can nurture and convert to a client.

2) Buyers are usually better leads than freebie-seekers. Atiba give away his book on his website, but he charges way more (it’s actually $33). That’s almost 3X the cost of the paperback edition on Amazon. Why does he do it? Because a lead who opens their wallet and says, “I value your information enough to pay for it” is more committed and more likely to buy high-ticket products/services in the future than the one who says, “Sure, why not? It’s free.”

3) Bonuses build sales. At the Book Club meeting, Atiba described one bonus that comes with the $33 book. That was enough to persuade everyone to raise their hands. He actually offers four bonuses on the website.

So Atiba is well-positioned to turn his book into a sales-generating goldmine. And I’m not talking about $33 sales.

I’m talking about what his customers buy after the $33 purchase.
