How a Tabloid Rag Drew More Readers Than The Bible

reading bible

Back in the 1980s, copywriting legend Gary Halbert once claimed: “More people read any single issue of The (National) Enquirer than have read The Bible since it was first printed!”

(Zoinks!)

Halbert did not share the “sickening statistic” (his words) to bash The Bible.

He was heaping praise on The Enquirer whose writers were, according to Halbert, “among the best anywhere on earth.”

Put aside your feelings about tabloid rags, and don’t get hung up on whether the statistic is true (I have no idea if it is).

The question at hand: Why does The National Enquirer attract readers like a super-magnet?

Halbert’s take:

“Enquirer articles are superbly written. They are clear, concise, crisp and, all in all, the most easily understood articles of any publication. And what do Enquirer writers excel at above all else? You guessed it — HEADLINES. Their headlines are so powerful, they have so much ‘grabbing power’ that, every week, people who have sworn they’ll never again buy such a publication, are almost forced to purchase it in spite of themselves.”

Great headlines (and subject lines) have grabbing power. They draw readers in. They’re irresistible.

When you deliver an email, post on social, send a sales letter, or craft any other content…

…are you drawing prospects in or pushing them away?

Are your subject lines and headlines…

…enticing or yawn-inducing?

…attractive or repulsive?

…irresistible or irritating?
