Hate Writing Emails? Good News.
Once upon a time, I tried to change the oil in my car all by myself.
It didn’t go well.
My first mistake: Choosing a drain pan that was too small for the job.
My second mistake: Trying to cap the drain while oil was pouring from it to prevent the too-small pan from spilling.
My third mistake: Coming to an oil spill with nothing to clean it.
What a mess!
Change my oil all by myself? Never again. I hate doing that.
Yesterday, I asked an accomplished business owner and author whether he sends emails to prospects.
His reply: “I used to send a monthly newsletter, but I stopped. I hated doing that.”
I told him my oil change story, and added:
“I don’t crawl under the car any more to do the job. But I still ask someone else to change the oil. I have to change the oil. if I want the engine to keep running.”
Same goes when marketing your business.
Some activities are mandatory if you want to keep the engine running.
For authors and other “thought leaders,” email remains the simplest, most cost effective way to turn leads into clients.
You don’t have to love it. In fact, you can hate doing it yourself.
But you still have to do it — consistently.
Because here’s what happens when you stop:
Your list goes cold. Prospects forget you exist. And when they finally need someone who does exactly what you do, they hire the person who stayed in their inbox — not you.
The author I mentioned? Smart, accomplished, genuinely great at what he does. His clients love him.
But he doesn’t have enough.
He relies on an inconsistent trickle of referrals to grow his business. Some months are good. Other months his business stalls.
So he’s talking to me now.
I told him it’s OK to hate writing emails. Focus on what you love to do and what the business most needs from you.
Let someone else “change the oil.”
