Back in 2020, when COVID moved me from a commercial building to my home office, Melissa and I rebuilt our backyard.
New pool deck, driveway, landscaping, and outdoor kitchen.
My home office overlooked the construction site. And for five months, while construction happened, my productivity plummeted.
Every time I heard an unexpected “bang!” or a worker swear, I’d get up from my desk to see what happened. I spent countless hours overseeing things, checking in with sub-contractors, and “inspecting” the work.
Meanwhile, critical business tasks sat undone.
Fast-forward to today. Our home is a construction zone again — thanks to the May 16 tornado that tore most of the roof off our house and leveled that backyard.
My home office has moved to the temporary house we’ve occupied since the storm.
And last week, because I wasn’t wasting time inspecting a construction zone, I had my most productive workweek in months — followed by a fun, leisurely weekend without worrying about the business.
My theme for 2026: Focused Implementation.
“Implementation” means “do it!” No excuses. No procrastination. No perfection paralysis.
“Focused” means doing only the things that require my attention — and delegating the rest.
