Farts in Space
If you’ve been following the news from outer space, you know NASA spent $30 million and 10+ years building the world’s most sophisticated space toilet — only to have it break on day one of the Artemis mission.
Turns out scientists spend a lot of time and money thinking about how to handle poo, pee, and farts in space.
Back in 1964, when spacecraft ventilation was far less sophisticated, NASA scientists worried astronaut farts might fill the Apollo capsule with so much methane gas that the spacecraft would explode.
Enter “flatus researcher” Edwin Murphy. (“Flatus” is a latin word used by fancy people who don’t want “Fart Researcher” on their resume.)
In 1964, at The Conference on Nutrition in Space and Related Waste Problems, Murphy reported he found a “large population” of people whose farts don’t have methane.
And then this… “Of special interest for further research was the subject who produced essentially no flatus on 100 grams dry weight of beans,” Murphy said.
Murphy suggested NASA hire only astronauts who don’t fart methane — or, better yet, who don’t fart at all.
NASA chose a simpler path…
BAN THE BEANS.
Good move, NASA.
Take note, business leaders.
We’re conditioned to think solving problems requires complicated solutions.
But sometimes the most powerful move is subtraction — ban the thing causing the problem.
Fire a bad client.
Kill a service that attracts the wrong people.
Delete the 47-step funnel and replace it with one good email.
Addition by subtraction is often the best move.
Don't go away yet..
