Enhance The Ordinary — with Yarn (and Stories)…

Around 20 years, a fabric artist in Austin, TX wrapped a door handle in yarn…

…and the rest — as they say in some knitting circles — is history.

The artist is Magda Sayeg. After wrapping the door handle, the artist, Magda Sayeg, wrapped a stop sign post, a fire hydrant, and other urban objects. Eventually she wrapped a bus.

She and others call this “Yarn Bombing.” And today, June 11, Magda Sayeg’s birthday, is International Yarn Bombing Day.

I don’t knit. I’m not a yarn bomber. I’m not taking the day off for the holiday.

But I love something Magda said about her art. In a 2011 TED talk she said:

“All I wanted to see was something warm and fuzzy and human-like on the cold, steel, gray facade that I looked at every day… I was very curious about this idea of enhancing the ordinary, the mundane, even the ugly, and not taking away its identity or its functionality but just giving it a well-tailored suit…”

Enhance the ordinary and mundane — without taking away its identity or functionality.

That’s a powerful idea. In fact, that’s the idea behind Story Power.

Transform boring, “blah-blah-blah” content (ordinary, mundane and prospect-repelling) to colorful, captivating, and client-attracting. Keep the identity and functionality (the information), but make it entertaining. Make it infotaining.

You’ll give followers that warm-fuzzy feeling. You’ll stand out as a human to hire in this cold, steel-gray, robotic world.

Don't go away yet..
