Doom, Gloom… and Inspiration

It’s twister season here in middle America.
On Friday, the twisters struck hard. Thirteen touched down in Missouri. Twelve people died.
No twisters hit where my family and I were. But they hit nearby, including down the road in Rolla.
An EF-2 (120 mph) tornado touched down southwest of Rolla at 7:50 p.m. and barreled northeast for 8.7 miles.
It was a 150-yard wide wrecking ball — snapping trees, flipping cars, and ripping roofs off buildings.
The storm leveled a strip mall on the edge of town, destorying eight business, including Full Range Fit.
The gym was scheduled to celebrate its grand opening on Monday, March 17. Instead, the owners spent the weekend picking through rubble.
Why am I sharing all of this doom and gloom in an email?
Because of one detail that caught my attention.
Full Range Fit’s co-owner Lela Wibbenmeyer told a television reporter on Saturday: “This morning we had over a 100 friends, family, people I didn’t know and another gym, their entire team came.”
Imagine that. A business sent all of its employees to help a competitor in a time of need.
I know. We hear such stories all the time. It’s part of the disaster news template. Community destroyed. Community members rally.
But this weekend, when the disasters hit so close to home, I paused and reflected on the news. The disaster. The need. The community.
I marveled at human beings’ capacity to give.
Inspiration.
