Beware of These Make-Me-Gag Marketing Pitches…

I was eating breakfast the other morning and nearly choked.

It wasn’t the spinach and salsa omelette that did it (although that jalapeno salsa made me sweat a little).

No, it was the email that landed in my inbox…

…with yet another breathless, over-hyped, meaningless statistic…

…about yet another can’t-miss digital marketing channel.

Here’s the subject line: “Live Masterclass – Why Pinterest Is 1,703x More Powerful Than Facebook (And How To Profit From That Fact)”

And here’s the punchline in the email: “…if you have a business and you want to market it but you’re not on Pinterest then…you’re missing out on a massive opportunity.”

(Gag!)

I won’t bore you with the details and all the B.S. statistical trickery that generated “1703x More Powerful.”

I’ll just cut to the chase. I’m fed up with this kind of garbage.

While I’m rolling my eyes at this subject line…

…I imagine countless, desperate business people who drop their spoon in their Cheerios and tally-ho straight to the registration page for the Pinterest Master Class.

I know SO many people who have been lured by the siren song of “can’t miss” marketing channels.

I know so many people who hopscotch from channel to channel, tactic to tactic…

…only to learn that the can’t-miss solution has misfired.

The internet is littered with marketing tools, tactics, and tacticians that over-promise (“1,703x more powerful!”) and under-deliver.

I have nothing against Pinterest. I have nothing against Facebook.

Those channels work well for many…

…but not all.  So when you see yet another breathless pitch about a can’t-miss channel…

…when you read something like “If you have a business…you’re missing a massive opportunity…if you’re not on THIS channel…”

…press pause. Don’t leap like a lemming.

And remember this…
