Stand Tall Like Lady Liberty

Fun fact about Lady Liberty…


After she sailed across the ocean from France to America, she lived for several months in a dark warehouse, collecting dust because she didn’t have a foundation to stand on.


This was the day (June 17) in 1885 when the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor — all 225 tons of her, in pieces packed in 214 wooden crates.


She was a gift from the French. But the Americans were responsible for building the stone foundation on which she’d stand.


And that foundation was not built.


The wealthy and well-connected refused to donate the necessary funds until newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer ran a campaign in the New York World and shamed them into giving. Pulitzer also rallied regular readers, asking for whatever they could spare (a nickel, a dime, a dollar) and promising to print the names of all donors no matter what size the gift.


The campaign worked. The funds flowed in. The foundation was built. And in October 1886, Lady Liberty finally stood tall… right where she’s stood ever since.


The moral of this story:


A magnificent statue with no foundation is just expensive scrap in boxes collecting dust.
