This Was Very Awkward

A few years ago, I was in the cereal aisle at the grocery store when I ran into my high school pal Lisa. I hadn’t seen her in years so I was surprised to notice…
Her belly was enormous! It was sticking out so far she could barely reach the shopping cart handle.
So, naturally, I asked, “When are you due?”
She looked down at her belly. Then she looked straight in my eyes. She held the look for a long, long, long, long time.
It was a pregnant pause.
Her “glad-to-see-you smile slowly transformed into a who-the-hell-do-you-think-you-are frown.
A chill went down my spine before she even replied (I knew I’d blown it).
“The baby arrived two weeks ago,” she said.
AWWWK-WARD!
(At times like these, “Congratulations, I’m so happy for you” doesn’t carry much weight.)
Reminds me of sales reps and marketers who assume things about their prospects without knowing the facts.
