I Broke My Own Rule. But Just For a Day.
Yesterday, I shared a story about a veteran who shed a tear as 18,000+ hockey fans cheered him and others who served.
That email did not include a call-to-action. No request to reply. No download offer. No event registration. No product for sale.
It was the first time in months I sent an email without a promotion.
I assemble emails using my simple P.L.A.N. framework — promise, lesson, anecdote, next step.
There always has to be a “next step” — a call-to-action for the reader.
But yesterday I broke the rule.
Why?
Because occasionally (rarely, really), it’s OK to let the story stand alone.
Let yesterday’s email honor the veterans. Nothing more, I thought.
Don’t get me wrong. I still believe in the power of the next step.
Fewer next steps = fewer sales. Simple as that.
But you have to assemble your emails properly for you to sell more without coming off as a pitchy pest.
