How I Escaped the 3 a.m. Anxiety Spiral
For me, Sunday was Sleepless in St. Louis.
I tossed and turned as my mind churned about…
…the work project that feels overwhelming…
…the persistent pain in my shoulder…
…the general contractor who is dragging his feet as we try to rebuild my tornado-damaged house.
That damn tornado. Rethinking that horror twisted my mind into sleep-strangling knots.
Round and round and round and round and round and round it went until it was 3 a.m.
I hadn’t slept a wink.
That’s when I remembered something I read in a book called Modern Wisdom, Ancient Roots by Dr. Srikumar Rao.
I grabbed my Kindle and flipped to Chapter 11: End Your Sleepless Nights.
“You spend enormous amounts of your emotional energy contemplating the two or three things that are wrong in your life.” Rao writes. “And you completely ignore the fifty to five hundred things that are pretty good about your life.”
Rao advises a nightly ritual. Five minutes before bedtime, “consciously think of how your life is unfolding exactly as you would wish in many areas.”
Don’t treat this as a checklist exercise. Feel it.
“Experience the feeling of gratitude. Feel it arise from the soles of your feet and well up through your body and gush out through your face.”
I set the Kindle on my bedside table and let the tide come in — wave after wave of thoughts about all the good things in my life. The gratitude washed over me until I floated…
…gradually…
…gently…
…to sleep.
I love this book.
We all know the feeling: Time rushing by while anxiety hums below the surface.
In Modern Wisdom, Ancient Roots, Srikumar Rao reveals how changing your mental models, not working harder, unlocks both success and tranquility.
Drawing from ancient masters and sacred writings, he shows you how to:
🔥 Achieve greatly while remaining serene
🔥 Bounce back from disasters before others notice you were down
🔥 Replace mental chatter with radiant aliveness
🔥 Inspire others to soar beyond their dreams
This isn’t another success manual. It’s a systematic approach to set aside the dysfunctional thinking that keeps you stuck (or sleepless).
